Customer Reviews

I am not a gamer, but I wanted to learn more about gaming and how it applies to my job and my customers. (I work in Marketing for a digital communications agency). I found this book really easy to read even from a non-gamer's perspective. One of the things I liked is that the book starts off with a quiz to help the reader determine what kind of path they should follow when reading the book. Depending on your profile, you can look for icons located throughout the book and focus on reading those sections, rather than reading the book from start to finish in a linear fashion. This book is a great read for someone interested to learn how social games apply to your business, with a combination of both theory and practical tools. As a marketer, this book was really informative in teaching me how games have changed the way customers buy and how this applies to the work I do.
I ordered this book as I use to enjoy Jon's articles on his blog. Social games are something one tends to associate to this decade. However, here we realize that social gaming exists since the beginning of our times. There's always been the need of social exchange and fun. Bringing these beyond leisure time it's something that really interests me both as a creator and consumer. And this is a very professional and knowledgeable approach to understand how this works.
Game On is the rare hybrid book that tries to speak to multiple audiences and actually succeeds. Radoff calls out his audiences right up front, and provides signposts along the way to guide businesspeople, game designers, and game fans. Like the best business books, Game On provides practical advice -- in this case on how to use the structure of games to communicate better with customers and make better products. Like the best game design books, Game On provides analysis on what works in a game and provides a plethora of example games and game mechanics. And like the best nonfiction, the book weaves together research, personal stories, tips learned through the author's experience. It's nice that all that is packed in one book, rather than three.
Being a longtime follower of John's adventures in entrepreneurship I bought the digital edition as soon as it was released. The content is extremely useful and relevant to anyone working in technology. The trends covered here are driving massive growth and valuations for online services becoming the next biggest thing. I am looking to apply some of these concepts to other areas inside IT to promote a better working environment. Any gamer or social media follower should read this and you will learn new ideas and concepts.
I got this book as soon as I heard Jon had released it. Jon's been one of the wise men of the Game development scene here in Boston and its great to have access to a brain dump from such an insightful source. I've been following a lot of the current Game literature and believe that this is a must have in the collection. Its even got a built in game in the format of "Create your own story" based on your perspective.
Jon has managed to create a book which provides great breadth on all aspects of social gaming while simultaneously breaking down the specifics (e.g. badge systems, virtual goods, advertising). Great read for anyone looking to learn more on the subject of social games but also allows executive and managers to implement immediate actionable strategies in the workplace.
There is no better time than the present to introduce gaming into the business world...if you follow the trajectory of the Social Web it is all about "engagement" and in business, those that engage with their customers and community members more effectively may become the new Microsofts and Amazons...

Jon Radoff's brilliant new book has captured the essence of using gaming to make the engagement memorable and fun. His writing style is an excellent blend of technical/business and story telling, making the premise of his book easy to grasp, benefit from and interesting to read. The book is organized so that whether you are a developer, an impressario/commercial user or an artisan/designer, that you have different paths of the text to choose from making it read as if the book was written just for you. Radoff's business game advice is not just timely, but is a novel approach to helping any company demonstrate their corporate culture, vibe and soul. In particular, he advises companies to view customers as "players" and to use human behavior analysis of customers to decide what your player (ie- customer) experience should include... well, er - its just fascinating!

If you are an entrepreneur, web content developer, a seasoned marketing executive or everyone in between - you should make it a point to take advantage of Radoff's book...it's that good.
Who is this book for?

Anyone who is interested in the web, creating products, game design or anyone who likes to read a book with a heartbeat. It's for the product manager trying to figure out how to design inspirational and delightful products. It's for the game designer looking for that new book of secrets that will expand his or her powers. It's for the web designer who is looking for an edge. It's for the executive who needs to sharpen his or her clue-stick.

Jon (Radoff) is a seasoned veteran and a genuinely fantastic guy. When I was starting my web company, I ran into to some tough times like all entrepreneurs do sooner or later and reached out to Jon. Jon and I had an honest discussion about start-ups and getting over the hurdles. He did so with frank honesty, great wisdom, and warm humor.

This book is full of all of those qualities and more. If you've come this far, stop being wishy-washy and buy the book already ;)
