Customer Reviews

I had received the CompTIA A+ Complete Study Guide for xmas because the All-in-One Exam Guide wasn't available yet. Well, I gave up on the Complete Study Guide after I was 1/3 the way through and ordered Meyer's version as I saw that it had become available on Amazon. What can I say? The guy is such a great teacher and the book is very well laid out and easy to understand, relying on plenty of analogies and diagrams. You get the feeling that you are in a classroom listening to your favorite teacher; Mikes methods of teaching are pleasantly informal, and he seems to have the formula for mixing professionalism and humor down to a tee.
Definitely going to give this book two thumbs up. I've been doing the things in this book for about three years, but I do my best to play around at home and do stuff like this anyway. I simply read through the book and took the tests on the CD. Saw that there were a couple of areas on the tests that I needed to review. Reread 3 chapters and took the tests this morning. I made an 845 on the 701 test and an 870 on the 702 test (both out of 900). Overall, it took me about a month to study and finally take the test. Not too bad for a book that's 1300+ pages. It was easy to read and easy to understand. The light jokes were nicely thrown in as well. Can't say enough good about this book. I hope the Network+ and Security+ are the same way... because I just bought them. ;)
I found Mike Meyer's CompTIA A+ Certification Exam Guide to be of great help in passing the A+ certification. His seventh edition is written in a clear and concise manner that's easy to understand and also makes a great reference book.

However in some areas, for example, the CPU section, I think that Mike goes into too much detail for the A+ certification and I found there is not enough background or troubleshooting information on VOIP technologies. Even with these shortcomings, I would still highly recommend this book.
This is a very very good book. It covers every detail of everything a technician should know and is very easy to read, If you really study it I think you could easily pass the exam. And I will recommend anyone who want to pass the exam.

However, if you are going to buy this book, DON'T buy the kindle edition. Because I bought it and have to ask them for a refund. The kindle edition miss almost everything of this book's actual value. and yes I meant everything.

Let's see what came with the kindle edition: an e-book you could read with your kindle, or kindle reader on your computer and iPad.
and here's what came with the paper edition: an actual book; a CD-ROM with video sessions; and PDF ebook you could basically read on any support reader; and most importantly, the practice exam and review questions that you can use to further prepare yourself for the real exam.

So, for 2 bucks-something difference, you don't get non of the goodies that came with paper edition. With paper edition, if you want to read the book on any portable device, get the pdfs off the CD and read on!

In my opinion kindle edition worth nothing compared to the actual paper edition.
To put it simply this is probably the most dynamic and interesting text-book I have
read in ages. Most texts use the format of dry facts and statistics while dragging
out the source material for what seems like forever. Mike has that unique writer's gift
of taking a relatively dry subject and making it fun and interesting to read. I love
the format he uses of starting with the broad history and moving into the factoids
all without losing his humorous touch. Using this book and a few practice tests from CompTIA's
own website, I was able to pass the test on my first try after about a month of study.

This was a great resource for study and I only have two small complaints.

1. The practice tests included on the CD do not have enough questions. This means that after
you take it once or twice you will have seen all the questions and it goes from being
a good gauge of your progress to just memorizing the correct answers.

2. The book does not cover VoIP in enough detail to satisfy the questions that will probably be on the
exam. So you will have to do a bit of extra research into VoIP to get up to speed on the topic.
Overall this is an excellent all-in-one guide that will help you towards achieving A+ certification.

If you want to get lifetime certification you better start now, because come January 1st
your certification will switch to only being good for 3 years if you don't get it before 2011.
Having been in the I.T. field for 6 years (although not certified) and after TONS of experience of fixing people's computers, upgrading them, and troubleshooting them, I decided that it was time for me to go for my A+ certification. Right now I am going to take the test in the next two weeks, and I feel VERY prepared.

Even if you have NO EXPERIENCE fixing PC's, you will by the time that you are done with this book. It gives you helpful hints on what to see on the exam, and what you will see in the I.T. field. After studying and doing the practice tests in the back of the book on the CD which I HIGHLY recommend that you do once you are done with this book because if you want to pass the A+ exam, you want to see as many questions and answers because most, if not all, are going to be on the exam but written differently.

The book also shows you how to stuff too; like installing a NIC, CPU, RAM, motherboard's, and a list of other things too. Also on the CD, there are video tutorials on how to do specific things also in case you want to see how things are properly installed without wrecking the hardware.

I LOVE this book and I cannot recommend it enough to people who want to get into the I.T. field. This is definitely a GREAT foundation to other higher certifications (after this, I'm going for my CCNA).

Before I end this review, I want to give out a couple of pieces of advice that Mike left out.

1. Take your time, I know that there is a time limit, but READ EVERY SINGLE QUESTION AND POSSIBLE ANSWER VERY THROUGHLY. Trust me, CompTIA likes to throw some hard-ball questions and think that they have the right answer when in reality it is the wrong answer. If you know that it is the right answer, go for it. Like I said, CompTIA likes to trick you into thinking that the wrong answer is the right answer.

2. Study the heck out of this book and grab an old computer and study the heck out of it. If you are new to PC repair, read this and know it like the back of your hand. Trust me, there are going to be some real world situations where you are stuck and don't know the answer, my solution? Before you go take the exam, get an old computer and study the heck out of it with the book by your side...having book skills is one thing, but having good troubleshooting skills is another.

3. My last and final tip....Be Patient. I know this is a THICK book, and whatever you do, DON'T SKIP ANY CHAPTERS OR SECTIONS! Like I said, CompTIA will throw some HARDBALL questions at you (and some soft ones too so expect those also), and if you are not sure about something, go back into the book, study, or research the heck out of it.

Like I said, this book (and an old beat-up computer) will help you pass the exam. Good luck passing that exam!
This book is great for its price and it shares alot of intersting information that can help on the A+ certification, but if you are entirely new to A+ cirriculum and are planning to start here you may find it more worth your while to find a slightly more expensive but clearer guide.

I purchased the book and it did a terrific job of using aids and examples to show important facts and explain topics necessary to passing the test, but after reading about half way through it i started noticing some problems. First off, the method the writer uses to explain topics can be considered erratic at best. In some chapters you will find overly detailed information that wont really help you in anything but understanding the topic better, while some chapters will be overly ambiguous and contradict previous statements.

The CD is a great tool to practice with, but like the book it too has some issues. Many of the questions you will find in the review sections at the end of each chapter and in the practice exams on the CD can be overly ambiguous, to the point where it almost seems like an opinionated question is being asked. I've found a few times where the questions quized over the chapter have answers that actually contradict statements in the chapter (particularly in the last few chapters, starting with video on chapter 19). While this isnt necessarily bad, and is most likely a mistake, it left me wondering which one would truly be correct on the actual test.

At any rate, its a good book to read and study for these tests, but I wouldn't reccomend it to someone who is not already learned in the basics of the A+ cirriculum.
This is real simple formula:
1) Decide you want to become A+ Certified
2) Have the desire and dedication to study
3) Buy Mike Meyers book
4) Read it- study it- use the included CD
5) Schedule your exam
6) Take the exam and pass
7) Get a better career or a raise at present job
8) Done!

Mike Meyers has been doing training longer than many of the younger techs have been alive. He has the experience and the gift of teaching that makes his books the best of the best of the best, sir(MIB).

Thanks to this book, I took both 220-701 and 220-702 back-to-back yesterday and passed both! I'm in my fifties, never had the chance to go to college and haven't taken a test in 40 years. With Mr. Meyers book, if I can do it, anyone can.
I just recently passed both A+ tests yesterday and have to thank Mike Myers for the excellent book. I used this book, Exam Cram Version 3, examcheets, ILT series from my New Horizons class and IT exam world practice tests. The two best where the Mike Myers book and IT examworld tests for passing the tests. Dont waste your time with anything else then these two sources and you will pass with no problem. This book will teach you about legacy devices that the new 220-701 just loves to ask questions about. The IT exam world will cover just about every question that you will run across on the test. The test cd is excellent as well that comes with the book but is lacking with command line commands and there switches. Two of us in my New Horizons Class used this book to supplement the ILT books and passed both A+'s with no problem. On to our Network+ training now!!
Besides a couple of college elective courses, I've had no formal training or education to become a support tech. I've built just a few PC's over the past few years and have had a real passion for fixing and optimizing them. After a while I became pretty good at it but I felt it would be nice to get some training of some sort. While this is a pretty boring story, I bet other people looking to buy this book are in the same boat.

I'm very glad I bought this book and took the exams. I found it easy to follow and I learned some very useful things along the way. The practice test are very helpful and without them I may not have passed the test. For the $35, how can I complain? Also, you can get the test vouchers from the authors website instead of CompTIA's and save a few bucks there.

Good luck for those taking the exam!

Took the A+ 701/702 4-16-11, both tests same day, and passed. Much like other reviewers, the book is a great reference. But you owe it to yourself to at least get another book soley written and dedicated to just passing the A+(not a reference). The book as a reference, it gets 4 stars, but for the test I would only give it 3. I read this book nearly cover to cover, and if it weren't for the practical experience I have already I would've been close to failing based on my scores. I hope this helps anyone because 5 months ago I was reading these same reviews looking for a good reference.
This review is for the Kindle user. Well, It seems like common sense; you would think that because it is a ebook that you would not get the CD and that there would be a possible link to the information on the CD. Well, nope! Now shame on you Amazon. You do not state it anywhere about the status of a the information on the CD. Now I say information, because when you buy a book, that is what you are buying, information. If the CD has information on it, then you should be entitled to this information. I have spoken to Amazon via emails and to the publisher and this turly seems to be a missed topic, WOW. I really enjoy the Kindle(I use it on my PC), but Amazon should set up links with this information for the buyers, because we did buy it.

The Book is very good and covers all of the important topics that you will need to know. You just have to commit it to memory.
I passed my test using a combination of this book and online tests (google around a bit, you'll find free ones).

Why do I say you need this? A+ is basically the foundation stone of what you will build your IT career upon. I know there are ALOT of short cut books out there that have less pages and more pictures and such, but think of it like building your dream home or a work of art. Trust me on this one, you DO NOT want to cut corners on your first certification. Its okay to do it later on once you've established the basics (see my review on security+) but as your first step, I highly recommend purchasing this book, getting a nice cup of tea, reading a chapter a week or so, and then doing some free online test. Keep this method of study up and I GUARANTEE that your confidence and knowledge on that testing day will be MUCH higher than the next guy who used the "short cut" book. Hope this helped guys, and good luck! YOU CAN DOO ITTT!!!!
As you snoop around the internet trying to find the best resource to get certified, you'll quickly discover that this book is considered to be "the resource to have". It truly is a fantastic resource and is simple enough anyone can pick it up and read it. Please DO NOT let the page count dissuade you from this book, there are a lot of pictures within its pages to help you understand. The chapters and topics are very nicely laid out, and at no time should a novice get confused. The author explains what you need to know, when you need to know it.

No book is without its flaws, thankfully though, this book's flaws are very minor. I noticed a few spelling errors and very rarely the author would use a Windows Vista/7 screenshot while labeling it Windows XP. At no time do any of these errors disrupt the ability to learn the concept and shouldn't impact a readers ability to pass the A+.

The CompTIA A+ exam is rumored to begin asking questions on windows 7 sometime soon. Do not fret, not only is there a companion book on Windows 7 by this same author (just search for ISBN 0071763929), but a lot of windows 7 answers are identical to windows Vista (which is covered by this book). Another great companion to this book are some online training videos by Professor Messer. These videos are FREE to watch online, however the guy will charge you to be able to download them. They can be found at professormesser.com (he also provides free Network+ videos as well).

If you read this book, watch the videos (as needed), and use the included practice tests on the CD which comes with this book..... YOU WILL PASS THE A+ ON THE FIRST TRY!!! If I could pass this test, so can you! And this book with help you do it!
Is Mike Meyer's book a good one? Yes. Is it the only thing you need to pass the A+ tests? No.
I would not have passed the tests without it, but if I had relied solely on it I would have bombed out. On the Essentials test there were many test questions where my experience with computers filled in the blanks. For the Practical, I used Meyers's book along with another, and am really glad I did.
The CD is a nice addition. The practice tests were very useful, although don't take their answers as final since there are some incorrect answers. The training video was good, although a bit basic.
Meyers does a good job explaining the background and basics of computer technology, but there are some things on the test that are not in the book. So get this book, it WILL help; but make sure you augment it with other material.
I purhased this textbook to refresh my knowledge before taking the A+ exam. I have been very satisfied with the writing style in the book, and the amount of information contained inside. There have been many times while reading this book that I read something I previously did not know, and was not contained in the other A+ books I have read. This book specifically blows away the Jean Andrews book, in pretty much every way. My only complaint is the book is in black-and-white, but for the price, color could not be expected. Buy this book!
Update September 13, 2011
I took my certification yesterday and passed with 788(701) and 800(702). I'm excited!! What's next? Network+!!

May 14, 2011--
I am currently enrolled in a computer program so I can prepare myself to take the Comptia A+ Certification. I use this book as a "at home study guide". I haven't took the certification yet, but everything that I learnt in class is mentioned in this book. This book also have history and well-explained passages about whatever you reading. Michael Meyers put alot of work in to this book I'm glad I chose this one.

-T.B May 14, 2011
Only into the third chapter of this book so far, but it is a fairly easy read, especially for those that do not like to read. The author uses terminology which is easy to understand and basically starts from scratch as if you had no computer knowledge. I am going to read this from cover to cover although I already have 10+ years in the industry and an Associates in IT. The only thing I didn't like is that not all the acronyms are spelled out. All in all though a pretty thorough book!
Well, its a good book for review. I passed the tests and got certified on my first attempt. I already have knowledge and skills in building, troubleshooting and maintaining computers so this was just a review for me. It might be a little more difficult for people who have not had hands on experience with computers. Its easy to memorize stuff but its different when it comes to actually put the knowledge to use.

This book has BASIC stuff in it. You WILL run into questions that WON'T be covered in the book. In my case, I ran into alot of Windows 2000 and Windows 7 questions. There were very few XP and VISTA questions. I didn't have trouble answering them but I was surprised by the distribution of amount of questions regarding the various operating systems. I was asked detailed questions about networking. Also, the funny thing is, I was asked to answer questions that I have already answered. Like for example, questions about ports and IP addressing. I was asked the exact same question 4 times on what class is 169.x.x.x. and what Port 80 is.

Of course, everybody will be asked different questions. No two tests will be the same in terms of amount of questions to certain topics.

The practice questions that came bundled with the book are odd. I ran across sections that are littered with spelling and grammatical errors. There were answers to questions that were wrong. Sometimes when the question asked for two answers, I could only choose one. I guess the software wasn't quality checked.

Now, here is an important advice: Even though you scored well on the practice tests provided by the software, it doesn't mean you will do well on the real thing. You SHOULD NOT memorize those questions. The questions on the real exam are random and will NOT be the ones from the practice tests. The practice tests give you an idea of what the format of the test is, don't depend on those questions.

I recommend finding an old computer that won't be missed for people who hasn't built a system before.

Overall, its a good book with some pretty bad jokes in it. Myers tries to make it entertaining but sometimes, its distracting.
There is a lot information about the history of the technologies of the hardware and operating systems. Its a good read but the exams won't test you on relatively old stuff like what IBM has done in the 70s and 80s.
This is the best computer Tech and A+ book ever written. It is obvious the author loves what he does and that is the key to being a solid computer technician today. You have to love what you do! Great book for newbies as well as seasoned veterans.
This Book is so much like the A+ Sybex book...(Both Good) Also I red the EXAM CRAM 5th Edition with it...Michael Myers book is a good book to pass the Exams....I PASSED THOUGH WITH THE HELP OF THIS BOOK....ANY ONE LEAVING A BAD REVIEW FOR THIS BOOK SAYING THEY DIDN'T PASS OR WHATEVER BLAH BLAH....IF YOU READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS BOOK YOU WILL PASS THE EXAMS... GOOD LUCK!
As the holder of a+, server+ and netwok+ certifications, I can honestly say this is the best book out there to help you pass. He puts in hints throughout the book that help you make sure those points stick in your mind. It's a much better book than I had to study with a few years ago, where you had to guess what key points might be on the test. I would recommend this book without hesitation.
It's a great reference for anyone in the I.T. industry who just needs a bit of help sometimes. Mike Myers and Jean Andrews always put out the best I.T. reference books.
This book starts with the basics, which is wholly appropriate given the nature of the CompTIA A+ certification. For those with experience using/tweaking Windows and modifying/building personal computers, much of this will seem basic. This book will help "fill in the gaps" in your knowledge, thereby making you a more complete computer user/worker. If you pursue the certification exam, having this firm foundation will help you succeed on the test, demonstrating a core proficiency and the discipline to acquire it.
In my opinion, CompTI A+ Certification, 2010 edition, by Mike Meyers is absolutely the best book on the market for anyone who is contemplating taking the 220-701 and 220-702 exams. I have read two other books on the subject including: CompTIA A+ 220-701 and 220-702 Exam Cram by David L. Prowse, and Mike Meyers' CompTIA A+ Certification Passport, Fourth Edition (Exams 220-701 & 220-702) so I speak from little experience. They were both good books, no doubt about that, but not quite as good as Mike's signature CompTI A+ Certification. Now when I say good, I mean, clarity, technical writing, internal finding aids, thoroughness, and style, as well as the depth and detail of this subject. Mike develops his topics in a way that helps to promote a clear understanding of this highly technical and complicated subject. You can read it to pass the test, or read it just for fun. Either way, it's a good book.

There is a lot to the CompTI A+ exam, and this book covers it all, everything from the basics of bits and bytes, the latest hardware, software and firmware, through the mind-boggling maze of the Windows Operating Systems, and, finally, to the complexities of security and networking. And Mike describes every detail with the novice reader in mind. You can get through this book even if this is your first introduction to the subject. It's a hefty book, for sure, over 1218 pages not including the back end material, so expect to be inundated with substantive information. But isn't that just what you'd expect from a book like this? The only criticism I have is that Mike didn't use callouts with his illustrations. That's fine if you know your way around a motherboard, know exactly what you're looking at, but for those who are truly new to the field, well-placed callouts would be a helpful touch. That's a small complaint, however, and in the overall I have to say that the book was worth every penny I paid for it. And buying it through Amazon saved me a good deal of money. Final warning: make sure you purchase the 2010 edition.
I Have been a Computer Technician for around 10 (years) and the stuff i learned from studying this book is unmatched by any the other books out there! I give Mike the thumbs up for the simple and effective language he uses. I used no other materials in studying for the CompTIA A+ certification, and i must say it was pretty darn good, i passed both exams just this week!
The guys who gave this book 2 and 3 stars ought to have their heads checked cause i'm living proof that this book indeed covered all the topics for the exams! All i got to say is, it worked for me it can work for you too! Keep up the great work Mike, I'm hooked!
I've been into computers since i was 11 years old and slowly growing my knowledge from there. Since i've picked up this book i can't put it down. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for more knowledge on the subject.
I found this to be a very solid guide in helping me study for the A+ exams. It has a good layout and easy to read. It is best to get this new with the CD. The chapter review questions and the practice tests compliment the book well.
After months of reading and reading this book I have passed my exam. The book is well laid out and has lots of detailed descriptions. I also read a previous passport version by Meyers but I recommend the All-in-One Exam Guide instead. Some of the material can be dry, but I appreciate the author's use of humor in the examples and the reviews. When studying for this exam multiple types of materials are essential. I used online materials, the Passport Mike Meyers' CompTIA A+ Certification Passport, Fourth Edition (Exams 220-701 & 220-702) book, and a book by CompTIA A+ Exam Cram. This book was the cornerstone of my study materials because it had the most detailed (and easy to understand) explainations of concepts. It has replaced another book on my reference book shelf. This hardcover book has a useful index and a glossary. It includes a cd with an e-book, practice exams, and useful utilities for testing computers. The worst thing about this book is that it is 5 pounds. I had to make sure I had a table handy while studying. I highly recommend this book to test takers and to any one wanting to expand your hardware and software knowledge.
Great book, used its review questions to find out the areas I was weak in studied over the chapters I was rusty in or did little work in such as printers, scheduled both test for the same day. Went passed with flying colors... I really like how the test breaks down the areas and you can see you need to look over and study chapter 7 or what have you... that way you can focus on the areas you need to spend the most time in and skim the areas you are familiar with. For someone who isn't in the IT field yet they want to spend more time in each chapter, but I've been working in IT for years and never needed it until recently since our company started requiring it... most of it was stuff I do every day but monitors and printers were my weaker areas... but honestly I don't know of anyone who doesn't trash a monitor and buy a new one... however they cover working on them as well as printers in detail... so its great for those of us who know most of it and is full of info for those are just getting started.
I had an old copy of this book (9 years old) and was afraid to order this updated one, worrying that there would not be much new or that the concepts had not changed much. However, the updated copy is well worth it. He covers the advances over the last decade very thoroughly and brings me pretty much up to date with building, maintaining and troubleshooting my machines. I am very glad I got it.
This is a great book for preparing for the A+ exam. I also recomend Exam Cram test questions. I studied with both books I pass the firt time, I completed both exams in 2 hours instead of the estimated 2 hours each.
This is by far the best study guide for 2009 A+ certification I've seen, and easy to follow. I have scanned several books at my bookstore, and many of them contain incorrect information, which can be annoying to someone new to the IT field, almost like no editor read them. This one seems to be accurate with no contradicting information. The author does a great job of building a foundation of essential beginner knowledge, and then gradually adds more complicated concepts and real working scenarios. I have never been a technician, but am trying to become one, and I don't find any concepts in this book to be too complicated or difficult to learn. The only thing I don't like about this book is occasionally the author throws in a quiz question that wasn't covered in that chapter, and didn't really specify that he wanted you to learn the information on your own (i.e. they would cover different types of processors and the basic technologies and differences in them, and then quiz you on a very specific part of one processor, such as cache size per core which wasn't covered). Make sure whatever book you buy is for 2009, because 2006 is obsolete now. Overall a great book, and the best study guide for this test.
This book is the foundation for ANYONE entering the PC or IT industry!! Also an EXCELLENT desk reference.
Good Update to reflect the latest processors and the Windows Vista & Seven OSes. Clear and concise as always, but he changed one of his best lines!
Before: "Redesigned to maximize efficiency, the Core 2 processors spank their Pentium D predecessors by up to 40 percent in energy savings..."

After: "Redesigned to maximize efficiency, the Core 2 processors offer up to 40 percent in energy savings..."

What happened Mike?
I purchased the CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide 7th Ed. by Mike Meyers to help me prepare for the CompTIA A+ exams. Before I get into the review, I want other readers to know that I had no formal training in IT with most of my experience coming from building/upgrading computers. Therefore, I not only had to learn the concepts taught in this book, but I also had to learn the terminology that is used in the industry.

I believe that the Meyers book was an excellent starting resource because he goes into detail not only about the material that you will see on the exams, but he also gives you a history of how the industry developed into its current state. Mr. Meyers also does an excellent job explaining how different concepts relate to each other and uses examples that should make it easy for someone that is new to the industry to understand.

With that said, the book is outdated in some areas because the 220-701 and 220-702 have been updated since the All-in-One Guide was published. Windows 7 and IPv6 are the two major areas that you will need supplemental material if you are not already familiar with them. Some of the questions that are included with the book were very similar the questions posed on the exam, but I would recommend another book specifically focusing on the A+ exam if you really want to be successful. The other material helps because Meyers will talk about some subjects such as Microprocessors in detail, but gloss over the 6 Troubleshooting Steps that the CompTIA wants you to know.

In my case, I purchased the Mike Meyers' Guide to Supporting Windows 7 for CompTIA A+ Certification (Exams 701 & 702) (All-in-One) by Mr. Meyers and the CompTIA A+ 220-701 and 220-702 Exam Cram (5th Edition) by David Prowse. The supplemental material provided by Meyers gave the background information that you need to understand the underlying concepts and the Exam Cram was a different take on the exam that helped me to understand material that was not emphasized in the All-in-One guides. I read through this book twice and and the supplemental books once and passed the exams with a 91% or above on both exams.

Overall, I give this book 4 stars because it will help you to understand the basic concepts that are questioned on the A+ exams. You really need to have a solid understanding of computers, printers, security, and networking because memorizing the questions in this or any other book will be a quick recipe for disaster. Meyers helped to me understand entirely new concepts, but don't rely only on this book because there are some things that are on the test that aren't discussed in detail in this book.
First off let me make it clear i have NOT used this edition. I have however used previous editions of this book and passed the A+ Exams. I am amazed at how many people seem to take the title literally as an ALL=IN-ONE.

You Should NEVER do that. This book goes in depth on topics because a true pc tech should know these things. I also recommend prior to taking your exam you actually open a case and take a pc apart. Along with that use this book and a few others namely Upgrading and repairing Pcs. You also will need a good network reference i recommend the Network+ all in one guide. I also recommend using the internet as well as getting a good book on operating systems.

Comptia exams are vendor neutral. They do however take certification seriously and so should you as a prospective technician. You should realize there is no amount of books out there that can substitute for experience.

All this being said the A+ exam covers many domains. In order to put every last little detail about each domain into a single book it would go into thousands of pages.

DO NOT Approach this exam or any other certification with the idea that oh i only need one resource and i'll pass with flying colors WRONG!

I already had a few years get that YEARS of experience before i even knew about the A+ exam. If you're new to the field especially use this book use the others i mentioned use google ask questions do anything and everything to insure you pass it. Don't put all your eggs in just one basket.
I'm studying for my CompTIA A+ Certification and this book is my bible! Language is fun and easy to understand. Great content organization that lets you study based on what you need the most help on. A must buy for anyone studying for their "A+"
This is a great book! I'm 18 and a recent (May) highschool grad. I was quite unsure about what I wanted to attend college for, and did much research through my last semester in school when I came across this. It was interesting from the very first day. This field was just right for me. I then got accepted into a college after taking an entry test that has it own academy for tech (Herzing University). To make a long story short, I've had this book for about a month and a half and almost done with it. I am completely new to this and this book is written in a way that a new & old tech can understand. I begin classes at the end of October and can't wait! Im sure I'll be well prepared. Once again, this book is great and a must buy.
I selected this study guide because it was recommended by Professor Messer. Having taken a two-semester A+ course at the local college, I wanted a study guide for the test.

I was shocked at the size of the book. It is huge! But, I resolved to read it. So I did, a chapter a day.

Excellent book. The Author clearly knows what he's talking about and, corny jokes aside, the book is very readable.

At the end of each chapter is a short quiz. Take those quizzes and keep track of the results so you know which areas where you need more work.

I found the practice exams on the CD less helpful, and finally put it away. Although it does contain other valuable practical programs/resources.

I followed up the reading of the book with a complete review of Professor Messer's online videos.

Passed both tests.
Book was delivered quickly. For anyone else studying for this, note that Windows 7 is now on the tests so review of this OS is needed. Otherwise, this book had everything needed for the Tests. I paired the book with an online instructor driven course and have had no problems with the information.
This is the only book you need to buy to pass the A+ tests. It is thorough, very readable, and provides everything you really need to know. I used only this book at got 830 & 840 on the A+ Essentials and A+ Practical tests. The practice tests in the book were harder than the actual test. I highly recommend this to anyone planning to get certified.
I had the older version and figured I would get the newer one. I was surprised to see how many pages, "less"... even though there are new technologys. It just means they got rid of a lot of legacy goodies. I never tested, but it was a good read.
I am satisfied with the book, has all features that it claim to have a nd it is helping me greatly!
I was completely new to most of the technical terminology discussed in the A+ Certification guide by Mike Meyers. That being said, it was a lot of information to try and comprehend in a short amount of time. I had an interview with a company, and they were willing to hire me once I was A+ certified. So, I took on the task of reading 1200 pages. I was nervous that it would not be enough to prepare me for the exam. But, I passed both A+ exams on the first try, by a small margin. That being said, I would recommend that you get hands on experience to reduce the exam difficulty. I have been an above average test taker and attribute that to helping me pass the A+ certification. Therefore, if you are completely new to A+ this book will give you most of the information you need to know. However, it is a lot of information. I managed to cram for about a month. The best scenario would be to have some hands on experience and use this book as an aid to learn the terminology. It will not help you as much in the practical application aspect. In all, this book is a great tool. The A+ exams are suppose to have Windows 7 concepts now. However, I did not receive any questions pertaining to Windows 7. That being said, this book does not cover Windows 7. In conclusion, I recommend using this book to help you pass the A+ exams.
I haven't taken the exam yet, but the book appears more extensive than the other books I looked at. The book includes a CD and has illustrations, which of course helps make the learning process easier.
One of the best certification books I've read in a long time. Author clearly knows what CompTIA expects and plainly tells you what you need to do. Follow his directions entirely and there will be zero reasons why you cannot pass the test.
I am about to graduate and I thought it would be a good idea to go out and get this cert. Fresh from many computer classes I thought it would be a snap to get the cert until I started taking the practice tests that come with the book. I found that even with my school structure I would at the very least pass the practice tests pretty easily; I was wrong. Granted, the book is basic in some portions but in many others I actually gained quite a bit of knowledge. I will be taking the test in about a month and I feel much more confident than I thought I already felt. The book is lengthy so give your self time, if you are a first timer to computers this book is a must for basic understanding. For us more experienced industry personnel, I have found that I do refer to the book now that I actually have it. Do I consider it a bible,,,,no not really, but it has come in handy over the last month. I will be purchasing Network+ and Security+ in about two weeks, I'll let you know how it goes.

P.S. while searching for job opportunities, I have seen the need for this cert come up more than I expected.
The book, DVD, and ebook that comes on the DVD make it really easy to learn. My only complaint, and CompTIA recognises this, is that it came out right before Windows 7. I have an ereader, and it loaded quite well. The DVD alone is worth the price. I wish they would (maybe they do) publish an addendum including any Win. 7 info. that is important to taking the tests.
I am completely new in the field of PC technician, and I can say that I just love this book. I purchased it with the purpose of learning basic staff about computers, and understanding better the hardware and hopefully software of the PC. If that is what you want, I assure you this book is what you want. Now, If you want to become a PC Tech, this is also what you need. There is no way to lose your money. This is one of the best investment in books I have made in many, many years.
